This tool displays the results of the Canadian Community Health Survey, allowing you to explore changes over time and across geographies in Alberta. The Canadian Community Health Survey is a national cross-sectional survey carried out by Statistics Canada to provide estimates of health status, health care utilization, and determinants of health at the provincial health region level. Alberta Health Services divides the province into five large health service Zones, and these Zones are subdivided into smaller geographic areas called Local Geographic Areas (LGAs). There are a total of 132 LGAs in Alberta.
This page includes a “flower chart,” which lists the health indicators in the Canadian Community Health Survey, a map, which shows results for indicators across local geographic areas in the provinces, and a line chart, which shows results for indicators over a period of time.
The “flower chart” shows a region's z-scores on each of the risk factors as compared to the Alberta average. A z-score represents how far from the average an amount is, accounting for the sample size. Positive factors are displayed in green while negative factors are in red. The dotted grey line represents the Alberta average. An area doing significantly better than average would have long green petals extending past the Alberta Average dotted line and very short red petals.
Clicking a leaf will display the results for that risk factor across all geographies on the map and over time for the selected region on the line chart. You can change the region by clicking on the map or by clicking the search link.
The line chart displays the results for the selected risk factor and the selected Local Geographic Area (LGA; blue line) compared to the Alberta average (dotted line) for the over time. The light blue area represents the margin of error for the risk factor within a Local Geographic Area. You can get results for a specific year to display in the map and flower by selecting a year at the bottom of the chart. The darker regions on the map indicate a higher value for that Local Geographic Area and lighter regions indicate a lower value.
The darker regions on a map indicate the higher value for that LGA and lighter indicate a lower value. Clicking a LGA on the map will update the risk factors flower along with the over time chart to display that LGA. You can also switch between LGAs by clicking the search link.
Most times the light green and red background in the flower chart show the Alberta average. However, if you hover over a Local Geographic Area on the map, the background in the flower chart will update to display the hovered area’s scores so you can easily compare the area selected in the flower chart with the area you are hovering over on the map area.
You can make further comparisons by clicking the "Save for Comparison" button. Simply select a new region and click this button to create a small chart of the region for quick reference.
Remove charts from your saved Regions using the 'x' at the upper right corner of the chart.
A z-score represents how far from the average a risk factor is, accounting for the sample size. The flower uses z-scores so that all risk factors can be compared. The line chart shows actual percentages of the population with the risk factor. You can see either z-scores or percentages on the map by selecting your desired view from the toggle located above the map.
Click "Save/Print Results" to save the results from the application. Certain web browsers such as Chrome can save to PDF while others offer the ability to print.
